I watched the movie Black Robe (it came out in 1991) for a History class, and I have a couple of questions about it…

1) How are gender divisions in Algonquin society portrayed in this film?

2) How do the Native Americans in the film view the after-life?

3) What are the different tribes in the film and what kinds of societies are portrayed?

i’m mohawk. the movie black robe is a piece of crap. its nothing like reality. its designed to make the white people look like the victims and the onkwehonwe look like savage killers. we weren’t then and we aren’t now.

want to know why we killed those missionaries? they don’t tell you the truth in those movies or in their books. they won’t tell you we caught them molesting our children. instead of telling you the truth, they make it seem like we just killed them for being so holy.

and before you say its a lie…the good holy church people continued to sexually and physically abuse our kids right up till the late 1990s in canada when they finally closed the residential schools. they killed over 50,000 of our children in those institutions. don’t believe me? canada just apologized summer of 2008. it is truth.
